apartment complex

Another shock rocketed the east side of the apartment building. The floor beneath my feet shook and cracked. I held the rifle tight to my chest and dove to the floor avoiding falling concrete from the ceiling above me. I scrambled to my feet and dodged to the open window hiding to one side. I took a deep breath and peeked out to the parking lot below. It was full of moving shadows. Ben came running into the room.

“What the hell was that?” he exclaimed. I shot him a glance and then quickly peeked out the window again.

“I don’t know. Felt like a pipe bomb or something,” I said.

“How do you know what a pipe bomb feels like?” he asked. I started to answer, but the ground shook again. No, not shake, phased. Like shifting in and out of existence. Ben and I both brassed for the confusion and closed our eyes tight holding our collective breaths. The head pounding finally subsided and I opened my eyes again and peeked out the window. The shadows were gone almost as if they were making room for something else. Something big.
